Florida coach Jim McElwain on Monday confirmed Will Grier’s season-ending suspension (and automatic 1-year ban) for taking a banned substance.

Here’s what McElwain and Grier said about the news:

“Will Grier won’t play this week and obviously in the near future due to taking a supplement that had something in it that was on the NCAA list of things you can’t have,” McElwain said. “It’s an honest mistake, but it could’ve been permitted by just checking with our medical staff.”

An emotional Grier then took the podium.

“I took an over-the-counter supplement that had something in it,” Grier said. “I did not check with the medical staff before taking it. I really hope that people can learn from this, learn from my mistake. I’m really sorry to everyone.”

McElwain described Grier’s announcement to the team.

“Look guys, this is hard,” McElwain said. “I don’t want anyone to forget that we’re in this for these young men. We feel for him. We feel his pain. He had a chance to address his team and spoke from the heart.”

McElwain said the University of Florida will appeal the decision.
