Florida head coach Jim McElwain is in an interesting spot when it comes to his talented junior receiver Antonio Callaway. Following Callaway’s recent citation for marijuana possession, which was not technically his first public acknowledgment of his marijuana use in Gainesville, the Gator coach has not yet publically disciplined his star receiver with Florida’s huge opening season game against Michigan in Arlington, Texas looming.

During his appearance at the SEC’s 2017 spring meetings in Destin, McElwain was asked about Callaway and his failure to learn from his initial run-in with authorities last offseason. According to Edgar Thompson of the Orlando Sentinel, McElwain has expressed some concern following Callaway’s recent citation.

“Is it concerning? Well, obviously it’s something we’ve had a lot of discussions about, prior even to it happening,” McElwain said. “This isn’t reactive. We’re constantly proactive. It actually triggers a lot more of the education, a lot more of the testing.”

Should Callaway be unavailable for the Gators’ first game against Michigan, the team does have an emerging crop of receivers and tight ends that would make most quarterbacks around the nation envious. However, despite the talent currently on Florida’s roster, without Callaway suiting up, the team would be missing one of the nation’s best big-play threats.

Judging by McElwain’s comments, he’s far less concerned with Callaway’s status for the Michigan game and far more concerned with his general well-being.

“Look, it’s not something I’m happy about,” McElwain said. “And yet, you know what? I am going to help this guy and I’m going to continually try as I will all my players.”
