Most of us can relate to the stereotype of having a crazy uncle in the family, the one you have to be careful what he might say or do during a nice family gathering.

Well, according to one Michigan staffer, Jim McElwain may have filled that role in Ann Arbor this season.

Most known as his role as Florida’s former head football coach, McElwain was hired by Jim Harbaugh not long after he left Gainesville following alleged “death threats” that may or may not have occurred. McElwain agreed to a reduced buyout, indicating that they really may not have occurred but apparently his unique reputation lives despite the speed bumps he’s hit along the road in his coaching career.

If you missed the news, McElwain’s stint in Ann Arbor was short-lived, as he has been named head coach at Central Michigan. While he may be gone from Michigan, his presence still looms over the program, as his name was brought up during Michigan’s Peach Bowl media availability Thursday morning.

Here is what Michigan assistant Pep Hamilton had to say about McElwain, including the nickname given to him by the Wolverine staff.

“It was great. It was great for not only our coaching staff but for our players. Just Coach Mac brought a wealth of experience and his people skills are off the chart,” Hamilton said.

“We gave him the nickname, Uncle Mac. He had a way of just calming everybody down and just really just sharing the experience that he accrued over the years with not only myself, but the rest of our staff and our players.”

Uncle Mac’s stop may have been a short one but apparently he left his impression on the program before quickly leaving. Just like that crazy uncle does with the family every holiday season.
