Here’s how the Florida graded after its 28-20 win against East Carolina in the Birmingham Bowl.

OFFENSE: B

Florida saw a surprise performance from running back Adam Lane Jr. Lane, who entered the game with 72 yards on eight carries, led the Gators with 109 yards and a touchdown on 16 attempts. The freshman averaged 6.8 yards per carry, including a 48-yard run in the first quarter to set up a 2-yard score. Treon Harris threw for 123 yards, two touchdowns and one interception on 5-of-11 passing. Harris also recorded 42 yards on ten rushing attempts. But the Gators recorded three turnovers, including two fumbles lost, and saw little production in the passing attack between Harris and beleaguered quarterback Jeff Driskel, who combined for 171 yards on 13-of-28 passing.

DEFENSE: B+

Dante Fowler Jr. ended a stellar career at Florida with three sacks in his final game. The junior, who has already declared for the 2015 NFL draft, halted a late-game ECU drive with a third down sack. Vernon Hargreaves III provided the Gators with an interception in the end zone to halt a potential Pirates comeback. Florida forced three turnovers, including a pick-6 by Brian Poole and two forced fumbles. Still, the Gators allowed 28 points and 536 yards of total offense, including 427 yards passing.

SPECIAL TEAMS: C+

Both teams saw average numbers in return yards. The Pirates averaged 25 yards on three kick returns and six yards on three punt returns. Florida averaged 27.3 yards on four kick returns and 0.5 yards on two punt returns.

COACHING: B

Interim head coach D.J. Durkin earned his first win in his lone game as a head coach. The former defensive coordinator, who stepped down immediately after Saturday’s game, gained the lead in the second quarter and managed to stay ahead for the remainder of the contest. Florida made several mistakes, but managed to hold ECU from evening the score.

OVERALL: B

The Gators’ performance wasn’t pretty, but it was enough to end their season with a winning record. Florida finishes at 7-5 overall, a far cry from offseason expectations, but a solid output considering its struggles throughout the season. The Gators hold momentum entering the Jim McElwain era and can focus on salvaging a depleted recruiting class with one month remaining until National Signing Day.
