Florida appears to have an opening on its coaching staff. ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg is reporting, per a source, that Howard University is hiring Gators tight ends coach Larry Scott as its next head coach.

Scott joined the Florida staff as tight ends coach in January 2018, filling the spot left by Ja’Juan Seider’s departure to Penn State. Scott has been in coaching since 2001, primarily as a position coach. He coached at various Florida high schools from 2001-04 and got into college coaching as a graduate assistant at South Florida, his alma mater, in 2006. Scott coached various positions (tight ends, offensive line and running backs) at South Florida until he joined the Miami staff in 2013. Scott was 4-2 as UM’s interim head coach in 2015 after the Al Golden firing.

After Miami, Scott joined Butch Jones’ Tennessee staff. In 2016, Scott served as tight ends coach. Scott became the Volunteers’ offensive coordinator for the 2017 season. After Jones was fired, current Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt opted not to retain Scott.

Scott was reportedly involved in Florida’s “Junior Day” recruiting event on Saturday and is the primary recruiter for Florence, Alabama ATH Demarcus Beckwith, one of UF’s remaining 2020 targets ahead of Wednesday’s National Signing Day. Scott and Dan Mullen visited Beckwith on Jan. 28.
