Steve Spurrier would be on board with Florida State joining the SEC.

Spurrier discussed the potential move in an interview with Orlando Sentinel columnist and radio host Mike Bianchi. The retired Head Ball Coach is in support of the SEC adding FSU, and another ACC school already in the conference footprint.

“Yeah, if they come into the SEC, heck, I think that would be good,” Spurrier told Bianchi. “And maybe bring Miami or Clemson with them.”

During the conversation, Spurrier looked back on the time the Seminoles almost joined the SEC.

“I think they had a chance [to join the SEC] back right before they joined the ACC,” Spurrier said during his Friday interview. “And I remember (former Florida State coach) Bobby Bowden said, ‘I don’t wanna play that schedule — Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia.’ Of course their schedule was already tough enough since they played us and Miami.”

Spurrier was 5-8-1 against FSU during his 12-season tenure as Florida’s head coach. The HBC told Bianchi that some of UF’s SEC peers got off easy not having to play the Seminoles annually.

“I used to sit back and say, ‘How come Alabama and Tennessee are not playing FSU like we have to every year?’” Spurrier said in the radio interview.

Florida State has made it publicly known that it is unhappy with ACC revenue lagging behind the SEC and Big Ten. If FSU breaks from the ACC, the Seminoles are expected to lead the next wave of conference realignment.
