Nick Saban points out major flaw in Florida State’s ‘microwave’ approach to building 2024 roster

Nick Saban spoke candidly about Florida State’s approach to building this 2024 roster — and why it may be backfiring after an 0-3 start.

After losing numerous key players to the NFL this offseason, head coach Mike Norvell went back to the transfer portal looking for more reinforcements. Exploring the portal has worked well for FSU in the Norvell era — especially last season, when stars like Jared Verse and Keon Coleman helped lead FSU to a 13-0 start.

But so far this season, that approach has not paid off. The Noles are 0-3 on the season and would fall to 0-4 with a home loss to Cal on Saturday. Saban said he’s not sure FSU’s culture is strong enough to recover from this slow start.

“When it comes to Florida State, they’ve always taken the ‘microwave fix,’ I call it,” Saban said on College GameDay. “To take a lot of guys from the portal. Sometimes that works. Sometimes it doesn’t. Especially when things go bad.

“You know, those guys were all in the portal for a reason. So now, you take these guys out of the portal, things don’t go the way they thought they were gonna go, and maybe you don’t have the kind of culture and leadership on your team and the people buying into the leadership that you need to be able to be successful. So this is a real challenge.”

Here’s video of Saban’s comments:

Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei is amongst the Florida State transfers who have struggled so far in 2024. The Noles have also dealt with significant injuries along their offensive line to start the 2024 season.

Florida State has already lost 2 ACC games this season and could be headed for a third on Saturday vs. Cal. FSU is only a 2.5-point favorite on Saturday at home against the Golden Bears.
