Georgia support staff members announce departures, thank Kirby Smart
Kirby Smart is currently on the market for a defensive coordinator and now has a few more spots to fill on his Georgia coaching staff.
The Bulldogs support staff down in Athens will look significantly different moving forward as departed defensive coordinator Mel Tucker took offensive analyst Jay Johnson to serve as his offensive coordinator and defensive analyst Tyson Summers to serve as his defensive coordinator at Colorado for the 2019 season.
Now Georgia’s support staff has lost two more members.
Former UGA offensive graduate assistant Cody Kennedy is off to Tulane. Kennedy has taken the offensive line coach position with the Green Wave. Kennedy announced the news on Twitter with the following caption:
“Excited to be joining the Tulane football family. Thankful for the experience this past season at UGA working with some of the best in the country. Ready for the future with the Green Wave.”
Kennedy wasn’t the only support staff member to leave the program recently as Wendell Davis has also departed Athens for a role with the University of the Incarnate Word. Davis was a defensive graduate assistant for Smart’s Georgia program. Davis played linebacker for Arkansas from 2006-09.
Davis is now listed as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Incarnate Word. He announced his departure on social media, too, and added the following message along with the news:
“Thank u @FootballUGA @KirbySmartUGA @Coach_mtucker @CoachSchuUGA for the opportunity to work 3 seasons with the best players and staff in the country, forever grateful…….. BLESSED 🙏🏿 TO BE HOME!”
All got promotions. That’s a very good thing for the program.
Why is SDS trying to make it sound like a bad thing that all these support staff members leaving for on field coaching jobs is a bad thing?
Because they’re all leaving because of Kirby’s “touching.”
touching? Yeah, it didn’t have anything to do with getting a coaching position and the raise that goes along with the position.
StG, you’re just wishing out loud. Give it another couple years…
Yeah, headaches with vacancies to fill, but all these moves – coaching and players both – are promotions to the next level. Some rival schools may try to spin it as a negative, but there are plenty of elite high school kids and hot-shot coaches out there saying, “Hmmm – things sure seem to pop for you playing for/working with Kirby Smart. Now, what were my career goals again?”
People are attracted to success and they will leave a sinking ship.
Our trend is over and this cycle is complete.
We got close and have a lot to be proud of this time around, just no national championship. We did luck out to avoid Alabama and we won an SEC championship!
Looking forward to the next 3 decades and hopefully we can win one next time around!
Broken record. Tired act.
The fact that you continue to (very weakly) troll means UGA is living rent free in your brain. You can spew whatever nonsense you want, but UGA is obviously doing something to bother you and you can’t quite seem to shake it, huh?
It’s so sad. The saddest part is that he’s actually a Tenn fan.
They are building something fierce in Knoxville……brick by brick.
We were so close! No one can deny it.
We just couldn’t get back there last year.
With everyone leaving us, we won’t get as close this year.
Good riddance to Tyson Summers. That guy tried to single-handily ruin Georgia Southern’s football program before he ended up at UGA
