SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said on Monday that six of the 14 football teams in SEC have reached 80 percent vaccination rate threshold, and talked possible consequences if teams do not have enough players for games.

During his time at the podium at SEC Media Days on Tuesday, Georgia coach Kirby Smart said Georgia is above the 85 percent mark in team vaccination rate, but added the goal should be 100 percent.

“We’re proud of that, but we’re not stopping there,” he said. “We want our players to get vaccinated because it’s the right thing to do. It’s safe. … What it’s really about is being able to save our season, being able to keep our players safe. We want to keep our players safe, we want to keep our coaches and staff safe, we want to keep the family members of our team safe and that comes through vaccinations.”

Smart said running backs coach Dell McGee was among the coaches who stood up in front of the team and shared why he got vaccinated.

“It moved me to hear him speak to our team,” Smart said. “‘Guys, I’m from the same community you are. I got my vaccine for three reasons: Primary reason I want to spend time around my family, he wants to spend time around his dad, his father, his family and be safe to do that. That’s the primary reason he got it. Second reason is he wanted to be a pillar in the community, he wanted to be a representative in the community, he wanted to show the people in his community where he’s from that it’s safe and be a role model to do it. The third, probably most important, is he had had COVID before, and he didn’t want to go through it again. For our players to hear that coming from Dell McGee, that was very impactful.”
