Falcons fans furious with roughing the passer call against Matthew Stafford
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford received a tremendous hit from Atlanta Falcons DB A.J. Terrell, and Terrell was flagged for roughing the passer on the hit.
Terrell made the hit on a third down and goal play from the Atlanta 7-yard line. Several fans and media questioned the call because Stafford was outside of the pocket and not attempting to pass. Others figured Terrell hit the quarterback too high.
Another former Georgia star, RB D’Andre Swift, scored on the very next play for the Lions to take a 7-0 lead with 4:16 left in the first quarter.
Here is a sampling of the reaction:

Bro!!! How’s that a roughing the passer on AJ Terrell. Straight dorm tackle on Stafford. Man give them a flag & let the defenders pull it.

That roughing the passer call on AJ Terrell vs Stafford in the ATL vs Det. Game is 1of the reasons I don’t enjoy football as much as I used 2. I get some of the protection calls but those are terrible man.

Stafford holding onto the ball and the defender puts a shoulder into the chest and gets a roughing the passer? Where the hell can a defender hit a QB without getting called for a penalty? Pathetic @NFL

Genuine rules question @ScottHanson;
How can it be ‘roughing the passer’ on Mathew Stafford when he never passed the ball. Why is it not just a sack by the defense?

Roughing the passer call was a HORRIBLE call. Matthew Stafford chose not to throw the ball away and step into a tackle. What’s the defense suppose to do??? #ATLvDET
