Georgia pulled off its thrilling comeback Saturday night without one of its key offensive players on the field. Standout TE Darnell Washington was seen limping as he made his way to the locker room in the second quarter.

After Georgia’s 42-41 Peach Bowl, Kirby Smart was asked for the latest on Washington, who did not return. Smart confirmed Washington is dealing with an ankle injury. He didn’t know the details at the time of the postgame press conference.

“Hard to tell right now,” Smart said of Washington’s status for the College Football Playoff National Championship. “It’s an ankle sprain. I don’t know if it’s high or low. He tried to go back and couldn’t go back on it. We’ll have to evaluate and see.”

Smart knows Washington, a Las Vegas native, will want to play in Los Angeles a week from Monday.

“The good news is he’s got more than a normal week,” Smart told reporters. “I know he’ll do everything he can to get back. He’s headed out west towards where he’s from. It will be important to him to try to get back.”
