Kirby Smart says Georgia needs to do a better job of opening ‘a can of whoop-ass’ on defense

Kirby Smart met with reporters on Saturday night in Athens following UGA’s 31-13 win over Auburn.

Smart was asked about Georgia’s issues with defending the run. Auburn running back Jarquez Hunter had a big night in that regard, especially when he was able to find space to the outside. He averaged over 7 yards per carry and scored Auburn’s lone TD of the game.

Smart had somewhat-complicated diagnosis for Georgia’s struggles against the run, but ended up boiling it down to something simple.

“I would probably attribute it to the fact that we’re in a 3-down front,” Smart said. “They blocked odd, mug, and they brought a guy around the edge, and we didn’t do a good job of handling that. We didn’t strike blockers and get off.

“You gotta do sometimes what you call ‘open a can of whoop-ass’ and we didn’t do that.”

Georgia got back in the win column on Saturday night after falling to Alabama last week. The Bulldogs are now right back in the mix at the top of the SEC, particularly following the Tide’s upset loss to Vanderbilt in Week 6.

Smart and Georgia’s defensive staff will have some adjustments to make moving forward, but UGA will carry a 4-1 record into Week 7 against Mississippi State.
