Paul Finebaum and Matt Barrie took on an interesting debate about the future of Georgia’s program in terms of national championships, and what could threaten the apparent dynasty.

“I think it comes with the territory when you are the hunted, and they are the definitive college football program in America, then bad things usually come your way,” Finebaum said.

Barrie put it simply that scandal, or controversy, is one thing that can wreck what Georgia’s doing. He then referenced Miami’s dominance before it fell off the top, and then USC under Pete Carroll.

“The only thing that can do it, it’s not another quarterback, they’ve got 5-stars everywhere,” Barrie said, “it’s not being able to handle yourself off the field, which I would hope Kirby (Smart) who seems very much like a disciplinarian, would recognize that you can’t let this wreck what’s being built in Athens.”

Barrie and Finebaum then discussed the media climate and the recent investigations from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, as fans have taken up the issue to defend their favorite program. Finebaum openly wondered how much of the off-the-field issues go on elsewhere, and how much is covered by the respective media market for a program.

“I don’t think it’s quite as big a story as some media outlets have made it,” Finebaum said. “… Ultimately, I think the attention will turn to the season.”

Finebaum also recalled that 10 years ago, Smart was the key assistant at Alabama going for a 3-peat, and it came down to the 12th game of the year on the final play when the Kick Six play happened. What was the issue for Nick Saban after that season? Discipline and lack of leadership, something Finebaum expects Smart to focus on this season.
