Todd Gurley has been released by the Los Angeles Rams.

The team announced the news on Thursday leading up to the 4 p.m. ET cut off before the running back was set to earn an extra $10.5 million in roster bonuses. If you were unaware, the NFL’s new league year officially began on Wednesday.

Back in the offseason leading up to the 2018 season, the Rams gave Gurley the richest contract for a running back in NFL history when the former Georgia standout was given a four-year deal through the 2023 season worth up to $60 million with $45 million guaranteed.

Gurley was scheduled to have a base salary of over $13,000,000 next season and represent a cap hit of $17,250,000 for the Rams.

It’s rare that a player of Gurley’s caliber hits the open market in his prime but that’s what has happened following this move as the standout running back from Georgia will now be an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with any NFL team.

The Rams selected Gurley in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft and he went on to rush for 5,404 yards and 58 touchdowns during his time with the franchise. Gurley was named First-Team All-Pro following the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Gurley is currently tied with Marshall Faulk for the most rushing touchdowns in Rams’ history according to the franchise.
