Trent Dilfer reveals that he told Justin Fields going to Georgia 'wasn't a good idea'
This offseason, former 5-star QB Justin Fields transferred from Georgia to Ohio State after failing to beat out incumbent Jake Fromm for the starting job.
It wasn’t too much of a surprise, given Fields’ talent and the fact that Fromm still has at least one more season before he’s eligible for the NFL Draft.
Ahead of the Super Bowl in Atlanta this weekend, Dawg Nation caught up with Super Bowl-winning QB Trent Dilfer, who said he cautioned Fields about going to Georgia (video shared on YouTube by DawgNation):
“I was probably the only guy that wasn’t surprised,” Dilfer said. “I told him it wasn’t a good move to go there. He’s a unique talent — one of the best I’ve ever seen. But these kids when they’re in high school think they’re just going to go in and beat out the stud who’s ahead of them. And Jake’s a great player. Jake’s not only a great player, he’s a guy who gets the most out of everybody around him.”
We’ll see if Fields finds success at Ohio State, but for now, Fromm is a star and is in no danger of losing his starting job.
“I was probably the only guy that wasn’t surprised,”
Every last one of you haters knows that’s not true.
I wish Justin would have came to Tennessee. He was to smart to pick us because he knows we will be trash for years to come. Gooo vols.
One has to imagine what it feels like to constantly be told what’s going to happen and then get mad when it happens.
And after all that.. not knowing the difference between to, too and two?
I would just quit if it got THAT bad.
Truths. However, “he can throw you back into a game” … goes and watches highlights vs LSU … scratches head.
Before it happens, just a joke people.
What’s the difference between really good saurkrat and rank, nasty pig slop?
Timing.
I wish there had been 2-3 years between Eason and Fromm, then again between Fromm and Fields.
I honestly kind of think Fromm saved us from Eason. Don’t get me wrong, kid was talented and had a beast of an arm but just looked lost at times. Would he have gotten better with more experience? Maybe, but the way Fromm came in and took charge was incredible. Eason will no doubt be a great QB at UW, I just couldn’t see the offense getting going like it did behind Fromm. Fields is still a question mark. I was the biggest fan of that signing and hated to see him go but he’ll either be the biggest what if or the biggest sigh of relief. I’d lean towards the former and agree about the gap between Fromm and Fields.
Good point about Eason. He looked the part, but never played it.
The difference in playing high school football in the south and playing high school football in Washington. Not saying they aren’t good up there, just not as prepared for big time college ball.
He played the part sometimes but he played like a true feesman other times. because he was a true freshman…
Yup.
App State was shutting us down – in comes Fromm – instant offense, scoring, and victory.
“I honestly kind of think Fromm saved us from Eason.”
Obviously Fromm is the better QB, no argument there.
But Eason was/is/would-have-been 10x better than Mason and Lambert. My point was it would have been nice to have had Eason, then Fromm and then Fields spread out over 6-8 seasons.
Also, remember what CKS said about Eason after the 2017/2018 season – that Eason had made much progress over his freshman year, he just couldn’t beat out Fromm.
It’ll be interesting to see Eason does at Washington.
I was interested after Eason’s freshman season to see how he progressed in the next few years. He obviously had his deficiencies but he flashed some potential that I haven’t seen from Fromm. Although Fromm is consistently good, I’ve never seen him make a throw quite like Eason made that SHOULD have beat Tennessee, and the throw to beat Mizzou. He had a bit of gunslinger in him and sometimes you need that.
Dilfer is probably the least likely Super Bowl winning QB ever. As for Fields, I believe he only started 19 games in high school. Does he have the potential, most assuredly, will it translate to success?
Least likely I think goes to Brad Johnson
Brad Johnson at his best was way better than Dilfer at his best.
Dilfer had a supremely talented defense as well as Ogden protecting him, Jamal Lewis AND Priest Holmes in the backfield and Shannon Sharpe at TE. Literally all he had to do was get them in Field Goal range a few times and they were good to go.
Yeah, Fields talent will probably translate to success.
Year 1: We’re the next big thing, join us! Year 2: We’re the next big thing, join us! Year 3: …. Starts to lose its luster after a while. Empty promises. No success. Typical perennial losers.
More evidence. Truth is powerful.
UTk hasn’t had a 10 win season in 10 years. Keep trying though!
Your glove smells like 2 bowless seasons in a row.
LOL
Do you think Pruitt last his full contract? With this being Fulmer first higher and him only having 2 years left on his contract as AD? And with him paying CJC 5 Million and Chaney saying he is retiring after this contract that he will only coach another 3-4 years.
