A group of college football fans just got reminded that things can drastically change on short notice in the COVID-19 climate. Iowa State announced Wednesday that its season-opener on Sept. 12 will be played without fans in attendance. On Monday, ISU had announced plans for 25 percent capacity.

Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard released a statement on the school’s change in attendance policy:

“Over the weekend, (university president Wendy) Wintersteen gave our working group the approval to move forward with the plans that were jointly developed. Our department announced those plans on Monday, which included allowing fans, who purchased season tickets, to attend the first game.

“President Wintersteen shared with me on Tuesday evening that, after weighing feedback she has received from the community, she has decided to reverse the decision. As a result, we will play the season opener without fans.”

Iowa State opens its 2020 season at home against Louisiana. Jack Trice Stadium holds 60,000 fans.
