Greg McElroy details Florida-Kentucky matchup questions, makes prediction
Greg McElroy gave his thoughts on the upcoming matchup between Florida and Kentucky.
On Friday’s edition of Always College Football, he broke down questions coming into the matchup and how he thinks the game will go.
One question on the Florida side has do with Graham Mertz.
“Here are the questions coming into the game. Can Graham Mertz stay efficient? He’s completing nearly 78% of his passes, that leads the SEC. It’s fourth in college football behind J.J. McCarthy, Bo Nix, and Dillon Gabriel. He’s going against DBs that were unproven coming into the season. Andru Phillips and Maxwell Hairston have done a really good job in these first few weeks, albeit against lesser competition. We’re not really sure what Kentucky has. This will be their biggest test by far.”
For Kentucky, the offensive efficiency has been an issue in McElroy’s eyes.
“The one thing that they have not done a great job of is that they haven’t really been a very efficient offense. They’re kinda boom or bust. If you actually look at where Devin Leary is throwing the football 45% of his attempts are 11 yards or more downfield,” said McElroy. “Nearly 20% are 20 yards downfield. I think they need to work something underneath just to keep themselves in manageable situations.”
At the end of the day, McElroy thinks Kentucky will be the team to come out on top before heading to Athens in Week 6.
“I think Devin Leary’s best football in a Kentucky uniform is in front of him. I actually think they get it done at home this weekend,” said McElroy. “It’s gonna be a chaotic, loud environment. I think Kentucky pulls off a big win for their program to setup what would likely be an undefeated matchup against Georgia.”
