Mark Stoops is moving quickly to replace Liam Coen as the offensive coordinator is expected to be hired by the Los Angeles Rams even though it has not been officially announced.

KSR has reported that Stoops is considering Rob Calabrese to succeed Coen in Lexington, and that would mean the second straight year that Stoops has reached for an NFL assistant to run his offense.

Calabrese was the New York Jets quarterbacks coach for Robert Saleh in 2021, tasked to groom No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson. The Jets went 4-13 as the rookie completed 55.6 percent of his passes for 2,334 yards, 9 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 13 games.

Calabrese spent the previous 2 seasons as a quality control analyst for the Denver Broncos. During his time at Mile High, he almost suited up for Denver. When COVID-19 wiped out the Broncos’ quarterback room in 2020, Denver petitioned the NFL to let the former UCF quarterback suit up against the Saints. The NFL ultimately denied the request, forcing the Broncos to play practice squad receiver Kendall Hinton.

Before the Broncos, Calabrese at Wagner College (2016-18) and his alma mater, Central Florida (2014-15). At Wagner, he helped direct an offense that averaged 28 points per game in 2018, an almost 7 point per game improvement from the previous season, and the school’s best average in nine seasons, according to his Jets bio.
