Mark Stoops commented on his new contract extension on Monday at his regular press conference, this week ahead of the Governor’s Cup against Louisville.

Stoops said they had been working on it for a long time, but he wasn’t very proud on what they showed in the loss against Vanderbilt, so they held off on publicizing it. Stoops wanted to show he’s “committed to this place and vice versa.”

The contract, which includes a raise and an increased buyout if he were to leave the program, guarantees a $9 million per year salary starting in February 2023 through June 2031.

Speaking about Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart, and President Eli Capilouto, Stoops said the contract should speak for the commitment on both sides, and he knows improvement is expected.

“I know I’m committed to being here,” Stoops said. “I hope this proves it.”

Stoops added that this is his home and what he’s helped build to this point.

“We want more, we want to continue to grow. Mitch and Eli expect more,” he said.
