December is getting crazier and crazier for college football coaches.

Since December 2017, coaches have had to juggle the Early Signing Period alongside staff changes and bowl prep. In recent years, the transfer portal has taken off in December with the NCAA’s introduction of transfer windows and the ability to transfer without having to sit out.

Mark Stoops would not mind an adjustment to the recruiting calendar with everything else going on.

“I was in favor, I was voting for the Early Signing Period. But, I think now, this month is so crazy,” Stoops said during a recent press conference. “I don’t know. I think we just got to get together and have some great leadership and some discussions about how to improve this process.”

Stoops added that while he can’t speak for everyone, he knows other coaches share his view of a need for improvements with the recruiting calendar.

Before the Early Signing Period, the earliest signings were in January when early enrollees made it to campus for the upcoming semester’s classes. Though the majority of recruits sing in December, there is still a National Signing Day in February.

Stoops and his staff signed 17 2023 commitments this week while preparing for the Music City Bowl.
