Milestone victory: Mark Stoops passes Bear Bryant on a noteworthy list at Kentucky
Mark Stoops is establishing himself as one of the all-time coaches at Kentucky, and Saturday’s win over Vanderbilt is another example.
With the win, Stoops picked up his 34th home win at UK, which made him No. 1 all-time with the Wildcats, and passed Paul “Bear” Bryant on the list. It is also Stoops’ 47th win as Kentucky’s head coach, which ties him with Fran Curci on the career wins list, per Kentucky Sports Radio.
This is Stoops’ 23rd SEC win, which puts him in sole possession of second place in the record books, and just two behind Curci.
Where Stoops sits on those lists, though, won’t be the reason he remembers this game. It’ll be because it’s the first game since the passing of offensive line coach John Schlarman, who died on Thursday.
Kentucky held on for a 38-35 victory after Vanderbilt made a comeback late. Kentucky QB Terry Wilson chipped in three touchdowns, Chris Rodriguez rushed for two TDs himself, including a 74-yarder, as the Wildcats ended a two-game losing streak.
Rodriguez rushed 13 times for a career-high 149 yards.
The offensive line had an inspired outing, and it controlled the line of scrimmage throughout, as UK rushed for 308 of its 458 yards and did not allow a sack of Wilson, Beau Allen and Joey Gatewood.
