Brian Kelly offers latest update on Jayden Daniels, projects availability for Citrus Bowl

Brian Kelly offered some surprisingly positive news about LSU QB Jayden Daniels.

Daniels re-aggravated an ankle injury during the second quarter of the SEC Championship Game loss to Georgia in Atlanta earlier this month. Kelly, speaking to reporters on Saturday, said Daniels looked really good during a 40-play scrimmage on Saturday morning.

“He’s been limited, but today was his last test,” Kelly said. “If we’d be playing tomorrow, he’d be ready to play.”

Daniels has dealt with the injury for a while, and wore a walking boot the week of the SEC Championship Game.

He suffered the injury in the second half of the Tigers’ loss to Texas A&M. The LSU starting quarterback left the game but returned after he had his ankle taped.

The Citrus Bowl, when LSU takes on Purdue, is set for 1 p.m. ET on Jan. 2.

  • No answer to the real question. If Daniels was planning to come back next year, Kelly would say so. Could be that Daniels doesn't want his last looks to be those last two games. He'll have two weeks beyond the bowl game to declare.
