Brian Kelly is expecting LSU to be in the conversation once the 12-team College Football Playoff kicks off next year.

LSU’s playoff hopes are gone this season, but the competition will move from 4 teams to 12 next year. Kelly said that he’s always been a fan of 12 teams at Thursday’s presser.

“We expect to be there. That’s why we’re here at LSU, to be part of championship play and postseason play, if you will,” Kelly said. “I’m a fan of 12 teams. I always have been.”

Kelly further gave his support for the playoff saying that it’s great for college football. He noted how the Tigers are ranked 15th and could get into the playoff if the format was 12 teams this year.

“I mean, you know, whether you’re on campus or hosting or you’re not, I just think it’s going to be great for college football. You know, who knows, right now, if we’re in this position, I think we’re, what, 15th? Maybe we get a little help and we slide in,” said Kelly. “So that would make it exciting, right, for everybody in college football that the top 15, 16 teams are still fighting for an opportunity for postseason.”

LSU faces Georgia State at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
