Brian Kelly is quickly trying to build up his LSU staff. With the early signing period approaching, the new head coach has been linked to several candidates both old and new. It would appear he’s keeping at least one member of the old regime around though, but it’s not an assistant coach.

According to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, Kelly is retaining the program’s director of performance innovation.

Jack Marucci served as LSU’s athletic training director for 25 years until, in June, he was elevated to an entirely new position: Director of Performance Innovation. It was believed at the time to be the first role of its kind in college sports. In Marucci’s new job, the focus was on exactly what you’d expect: finding new ways, through technological or scientific advancements, to give the Tigers an on-field advantage. The longtime trainer has been part of several advancements in sports medicine during his time at LSU, including a 17-year study that helped to cut down the recovery time for ACL injuries.

“Jack is the most innovative trainer I have ever worked with,” said former LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron earlier this year when Marucci’s new position was announced. “He was an integral part of building the culture of our championship program, and he will be a tremendous asset to us in his new role. His ability to take cutting edge technology, and use it to study performance in order to help us develop our players, is the best in the nation.”
