Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers got trounced by the Tennessee Volunteers Saturday 40-13.

From the opening kickoff, LSU never had a chance. The Tigers muffed the opening kickoff and Tennessee quickly jumped out to a 7-0 lead. It was all Vols the rest of the way. Beating Tennessee this year is a tall task for any team, but when teams commit disastrous turnovers and bad coaching decisions, it’s nearly impossible.

With halftime nearing, Kelly inexplicably went for it on 4th down near midfield, and Tennessee sacked Jayden Daniels for a massive loss. That led to more Tennessee points, as the Vols took the 23-7 halftime lead.

The knock on Kelly hasn’t been that he’s not a good coach. He certainly is; however, he’s struggled against top 10-ranked teams during his career, stemming back to his time at Notre Dame. Against elite programs, Kelly’s teams have struggled.

In fact, after Saturday’s loss, Kelly is now just 4-13 against top 10 teams since 2010, according to Darren Rovell.

LSU returns to action next Saturday against Florida.
