LSU is off to a difficult start this season with losses to Mississippi State, Missouri and Auburn. But there’s still some positives for the future, including multiple freshmen who have flashed their potential already.
During his weekly visit with “Off The Bench” on 104.5 ESPN, coach Ed Orgeron explained which players have been the most improved already this season.
“Well you gotta look at BJ Ojulari, the job he’s done, coming in as a freshman, making the plays he’s made. Look at TJ. TJ Finley, the first game he played, he was outstanding. I think those guys are showing a lot of promise. Arik Gilbert is showing a lot of promise. We’ve got to get him the ball more, a big-time target.”
Are there going to be more schemes to get Gilbert the ball?
“Yes, I think we need to split him out more, get him the ball more, get him the ball early,” Orgeron said. “Sometimes we get him the ball too late in the game. I thought in the Missouri game, we had an outstanding plan for him, especially on those go routes. I thought he had a big game there. But the more we get him the ball, the better off we’re going to be.”
Gilbert has 22 catches for 259 yards and two touchdowns. That Missouri game was his best of the season as Gilbert had six catches for 97 yards and a touchdown.
