LSU held its fifth spring practice Tuesday, and Ed Orgeron met with the media following the event.

Star running back Derrius Guice missed practice due to a minor ankle injury. Orgeron noted (via The Advocate) that it’s “nothing bad,” and he added that it’s a “swollen ankle or something like that.”

Guice is the backbone of LSU’s talented offense, and while the quarterback position and air attack, namely Danny Etling, need to improve, an emerging No. 2 back behind Guice would be huge for the offense.

Nick Brossette is thought to be the ideal candidate, but that’s not who’s stepping up his game this spring. That belongs to Darrel Williams. Although Williams is listed at 233 pounds on LSU’s roster, it’s more likely that he was closer to 240 or even over that. Now, he’s down to 229.

Having an emerging Williams and a talented other option in Brossette will help Guice and the passing game become more potent. That trio could be the SEC’s collective best in 2017, but Georgia and Alabama will surely have a say in that.

Nonetheless, a slimmer and trimmer Williams is a big asset for the ground game. Thankfully, Guice’s injury doesn’t look too serious, and you can bet that LSU won’t trot him out there for a spring practice on a bum wheel.
