Garrett Nussmeier shines in flawless performance in LSU's spring game
Garrett Nussmeier had a perfect outing in LSU’s spring game on Saturday afternoon.
He went 7-for-7 for 172 yards and 2 touchdowns on the day. It was an ideal performance for Nussmeier, who will enter the summer as the expected starter at quarterback for the Tigers to begin the 2024 season.
It was just the sort of performance LSU was looking for as it attempts to replace Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels. It was also a continuation of Nussmeier’s 395-yard, 3-touchdown performance in a win over Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl at the end of the 2023 campaign.
Nussmeier’s day began with a touchdown pass to Zavion Thomas on a deep ball. Nussmeier worked his way through the pocket before finding a wide open Thomas in the back of the end zone:

Nussmeier also connected with receiver Kyren Lacy on a deep ball for his second touchdown throw of the day. Here’s a look at that play:

Nussmeier has spent the past 3 seasons as a reserve at LSU, and now appears poised to take the reigns as the starter. So far in his LSU career, Nussmeier has completed 58.9% of his passes for 1,720 yards, 11 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.
LSU will now enter the next phase of its offseason with spring ball in the rearview mirror. The spring transfer portal window opens on Monday, and it will be the first opportunity for some of LSU’s new defensive coaches to get into the portal since arriving in Baton Rouge.
LSU’s regular season win total currently sits at 9.5, per bet365. Fans can bet on LSU’s regular season win total or national championship odds (+1200) at bet365 during the offseason.

The DB’s seem to need work, still.
Lots of receivers were wide open in the SEC Spring Games. Your DB’s will improve LSUSMC.
Our defense is worse than last year.
Nuss is an interception machine and our defense made him look ok.
Our defense will defend well our record on playoff games missed.
7-7 would be good under any circumstances.
To be fair, when you have speedy WRs running fly patterns and a QB who can find them, it probably doesn’t matter much who is trying to defend them. The offense may take a small step back, but it’s going to be dangerous again. I just want to see some improvement on defense.
Don’t worry about the D backs. They will be just fine come the season. The D might not measure up to the high LSU standards of the past, but it will be more than adequate for the Tigers to be in the thick of a NC run. Remember they were going against what will again be one of the best offenses in the nation. Besides, has anyone really seen a spring game that was truly indicative of how a team will fair in the regular season?
Good points. I’m definitely optimistic on the offense again leading the SEC and with the defense being much better.
Can you say back to back Heisman$?
