LSU coach Les Miles announced during his Monday press conference that Brandon Harris would be the starter at quarterback when the Tigers take the field in Jordan-Hare Stadium against Auburn on Saturday. The announcement comes as a bit of a surprise, as Miles generally plays things like this close to the vest.

Harris, whom Miles said gave the team a “spark” against New Mexico State, lit up the Aggies and fueled their 63-7 win. After starter Anthony Jennings committed three turnovers in the first quarter, Harris came in for relief duty and led the Tigers to seven straight touchdown drives. The freshman finished 11-of-14 for 178 yards and 3 TDs while running for 36 yards and 2 TDs.

Miles added later in his press conference that Jennings could come in for a series here or there to give Harris a break. He said that the team still has confidence in both quarterbacks. The coach added that it was “not a difficult decision” to make Harris the starter. He said that he thought it was best to inform the freshman early to avoid questions from the media.

Saturday’s game against Auburn will be the first road test for a team that will be relying heavily on freshmen. Miles sounded unworried by that prospect.

“I think our guys (the true freshmen) will enjoy the road venue,” Miles told reporters. “Our young guys will look to play well on the road.”
