The LSU Tigers thought they were going to have their next “DBU” athlete in 5-star CB Patrick Surtain Jr. during Wednesday’s National Signing Day.

However, late on Tuesday night, Surtain informed the Tigers that he was going to commit to Alabama instead, and then proceeded to do just that on Wednesday.

After LSU landed one of its worst recruiting classes since 2000, coach Ed Orgeron held a press conference to discuss the class. During his meeting with the media, he said it was very difficult to hear Surtain would be heading to one of the Tigers’ biggest rivals.

“It’s tough,” he said. “One of those players was three years, maybe four. We put a lot of work into him. All indications the whole time was that he was coming here. The night before, you get a phone call, and he’s not. Obviously, you have to change your plan. That’s recruiting. We are happy with the guys that we got. We want guys who want to be at LSU.”

The Tigers finished with the nation’s No. 15 overall class and the No. 5 class in the SEC, per 247Sports. Now, it’ll be up to Coach O and his staff to turn the players they do have into successful athletes in 2018 and beyond.
