LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is looking at a third year as a backup to begin his career, but he has no intention of leaving Baton Rouge.

According to The Bengal Tiger’s Shea Dixon, Nussmeier is staying at LSU and did not put his name into the transfer portal prior to the spring window closing. In an age of remarkable quarterback movement, Nussmeier is staying put and waiting for his opportunity.

Jayden Daniels enters his final year of eligibility in 2023 and Nussmeier, a redshirt sophomore with 3 years of eligibility remaining, appears to be the heir apparent. He played in 4 games as a true freshman in 2021 and then another 7 games last fall. Daniels, though, started all 14 and helped the Tigers to 10 wins.

The pair split first-team reps during the spring and both looked encouraging during the LSU spring game on April 22.

During an appearance on The Paul Finebaum Show the week leading up to the spring game, Kelly said he felt LSU has 2 starters at the position: “Both of them can win in the SEC.”

Had Nussmeier entered the transfer portal, he would have been one of the more sought-after players.

A 6-foot-1 Lake Charles native, Nussmeier was a top-100 recruit out of the 2021 class. He was rated as a 4-star prospect.
