Juwan Howard will get some good-natured ribbing for this one for a long time.

Howard, the Michigan men’s basketball coach, somehow had a momentary lapse in judgement and, for some reason, stood on the court and scooped up the ball to hand it to an Iowa player during the game against Iowa. After the referees discussed the incident, Howard was whistled for a technical foul. It happened early in the second half with the game tied at 41.

The Detroit Free Press offered a preview of the game this way:

Michigan Wolverines are in a “make or break scenario” when it comes to fighting for their NCAA tournament lives. Although the Wolverines are above .500 in the league, it’s all about grabbing as many wins as they can before the Big Ten tournament in early March.

Michigan faces an Iowa Hawkeyes team that enters Thursday night winners of three straight games. Things don’t get any easier for the Hawkeyes after Michigan, with games against Ohio State, Michigan State and a fiesty Nebraska team.

Fans and media predictably reacted to the hilarious event.
