Paul Finebaum has been no stranger to discussing Jim Harbaugh during his Michigan tenure, as he’s been one of his most vocal critics, and now that the Wolverines head coach seems all but set to return to the NFL, Finebaum is discussing potential replacements at Michigan.
On an appearance on ESPN’s “Get Up,” Finebaum discussed 3 names to watch: Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien, Carolina’s Matt Rhule and Stanford’s David Shaw.
“I think the shortlist ought to include Bill O’Brien, who has done very well in college at Penn State, of course, before the NFL,” Finebaum said on ESPN’s “Get Up.” “Another name to keep your eye on is Matt Rhule. He has really done a terrible job at the Carolina Panthers, but he was brilliant in college football at Temple and Baylor.”
“And a wildcard possibly would be David Shaw. Remember, Harbaugh went Stanford to San Francisco to Michigan, and I think he is an undervalued coach, who a couple of years ago was one of the top-five coaches in the country.”
All 3 are certainly interesting names at Michigan. Because of his history in the Big Ten, Alabama’s O’Brien would be a nice fit. Matt Rhule has reportedly been interested in the job should Harbaugh leave for the NFL. Finebaum’s wildcard name of David Shaw would be an excellent hire, too.
Michigan’s program is in great shape for whoever the next coach will be.
