Dan Mullen spoke to the media during the SEC’s first weekly media teleconference of the 2017 season Wednesday. During his segment of the call, Mullen discussed the opening season game in Starkville, the status of his program heading into 2017, as well as the season opening matchup against Charleston Southern.

The Mississippi State-Charleston Southern game kicks off Saturday at 4:00 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.

Here are the highlights from Mullen’s call:

  • Our prayers go to everyone hit by this storm all over the country.
  • I know we are excited to get this football season underway. I thought it was beneficial to start camp earlier and get more rest for the players but now we are ready to get the season kicked off.
  • On the rotation at RB, how many will see the field this week? We could play as many as four this weekend. I like to rotate often early in the season, keep everyone fresh.
  • Any update on Chauncey Rivers? No, there is not.
  • Kicking battle, still a three-man race? I’m trying to find consistency, that’s the biggest thing. All three are competing and battling and I’ve seen the same approach. As the pressure builds, which one of them thrives on it? We don’t know that yet. I want to look in their eyes and see who has that fire in their eyes.
