Mariota beats Dak Prescott for Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award

The Hesiman Trophy favorite and Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota took home likely his first of many awards this season when he was named the winner of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

Mariota was among five finalists for the award, one of which was Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott.

According to the release sent out by the Golden Arm Foundation, the Golden Arm Award is given to the top quarterback “who best exemplifies character, scholastic and athletic achievement.

Mariota has 3,470 passing yards, 48 passing touchdowns and just two interceptions on the season. In addition to this award, Mariota was also named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year.

Prescott, who was one of the finalists for the award, turned in a breakout season for the Bulldogs and was one of the SEC’s premier players in 2014.

He finished the regular season with 3,935 total yards and 37 total touchdowns.

The last SEC quarterback to win the Golden Arm Award was Alabama’s AJ McCarron in 2013.
