Mississippi State has a new opening on its staff, as an offensive assistant has decided to leave the school.

According to Steve Robertson of 247Sports.com, Bulldogs inside wide receivers coach Dave Nichol will be going to USC to join new head coach Lincoln Riley’s staff. Nichol had spent the past 2 seasons serving under Mike Leach at Mississippi State.

Nichol and Riley were both student assistants at Texas Tech from 2003-05 on Leach’s Red Raiders staff. Nichol and Riley were also both assistants at East Carolina from 2012-13.

This will be the 1st time in a while that Nichol will be separated from Leach, as he spent 4 seasons at Washington State before coming with Leach to Mississippi State.

Nichol has prior experience in the Pac-12, as he served as an assistant at Arizona from 2007-11.

It will be interesting to see who else Riley targets to join his new staff, as it’s possible more SEC assistants could be on the move. There have been a ton of moves during this coaching carousel, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see anything happen at this point.
