Social media reacts to Mississippi State WBB coach Vic Schaefer leaving for Texas
Women’s college basketball fans everywhere were shocked by the news of Vic Schaefer’s departure from Mississippi State to become the new head coach of the Texas Longhorns.
On social media, the reactions varied, with plenty of popular memes sprinkled in. Multiple media members noted Schaefer was often considered the future head coach at Texas A&M. Bulldogs fans shared heartbreak and frustration.
This came as a surprise to me. Vic was always considered “next in line” for the A&M job when Gary was ready to retire. But unless he’s this century’s DX Bible in reverse, that ain’t happening now. Here’s hoping Blair coaches until he’s ready to hang ‘em up and wins another title. https://t.co/Z7ovBpxyUk

I assumed Vic Schaefer would wait for Gary Blair to retire at Texas A&M – but he may coach until he's 100.

It's such a loyal and tight-knit fan base for @HailStateWBK and all Mississippi State athletics, so Vic Schaefer's departure has to hurt. But the program became a national power in his eight seasons, so whoever takes that job has a lot to work with and many devoted fans.

Vic Schaefer showed that at the end of the day, HIS BEST INTEREST is what comes first.
So players, take a page out of his book. If you’re unhappy somewhere, leave. There is no loyalty in this game & you don’t owe anybody ANYTHING.

Schaefer compiled a record of 221-62 in his 8 years in Starkville, leading the Bulldogs to the last 5 NCAA Tournaments*. Mississippi State lost the title game in 2017 and 2018.
*The Bulldogs were on track for a sixth NCAA tournament berth had the postseason not been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
