Barry Odom's brother Brian reportedly leaving Missouri coaching staff
If at first you don’t succeed, try again. That must be the motto of Oklahoma’s new defensive coordinator, Alex Grinch.
How is that? Well, last week it was reported that Missouri outside linebackers coach Brian Odom was a target of Grinch. Brian Odom, the brother of Mizzou head coach Barry Odom, initially rebuffed the interest from the new Sooner defensive coordinator. However, now both SoonerScoop and Gabe DeArmond of PowerMizzou.com are both reporting that Brian is expected to leave Missouri’s staff.
Before being hired on at Missouri by his brother, Odom worked at Washington State under Grinch. The two assistants helped quickly turn Washington State from one of the worst defenses in the Pac-12 into one of its best.
Odom is expected to coach linebackers for the Sooners under Grinch. Before his coaching career, Odom was a running back at Oklahoma before finishing his playing career at Southeastern Oklahoma. He is a native of Ada, Okla.
This is a promotion for Brian, hope he gets more money. If Walters and Barry are happy with Hargreaves they shouldn’t need another LB coach. My thing is bringing back the devastating defensive ends. If Sterk and Odom can bring a defensive end specialist coach from the pros or Top 25 on a short contract he could beef up Brick Haley’s impact and recruiting – kind of like getting Monachino and McGee for a time. – – Now, if they could just find an elite placekicker from the soccer world.
But the thing is though, Walters is an absolutely terrible Defensive Coordinator. I know Barry is supposed to be a defensive-minded coach, but that hasn’t shown in the last 3 season as HC. Unless things change, I’m going to continue pushing for someone else to take over the DC position. Perhaps Bret Venerables? Or maybe someone else like Bret Bielema or Tracy Claeys from Washington State. Just something needs to change or its going to be another disappointing season. Especially with the rest of the SEC east getting their act together, if we don’t change, there’s going to be issues with the future of the program.
There is zero chance Brent Venables leaves clemson for Mizzou for the same position and a lower salary.
