Known as a formidable defensive team in recent years, Missouri has struggled on that side of the ball in 2016.

When defensive coordinator Barry Odom replaced Gary Pinkel as the Tigers’ head coach, many expected the defense to remain the team’s greatest strength. Instead, it has been Missouri’s offense that has led the way this season leaving some to wonder what’s going on with a defense that is currently No. 84 yards allowed per game and No. 42 in points per game.

Senior linebacker Michael Scherer is one of the Tigers’ leaders on defense and the team’s top returning tackler. Speaking with reporters on Monday, Scherer laid out his thoughts on the defensive struggles.

While some would expect Odom to keep the same scheme in place after his transition to head coach, it appears the Tigers are in a bit of a defensive transition. If that’s the case, improvement over the second half of the season would go a long way towards putting fans at ease.

That improvement could begin this weekend when Missouri travels to Florida for a 4 p.m. ET kickoff.
