Mizzou announces it will not play Music City Bowl, pauses all team activities
Mizzou’s 2020 season is officially over. The program announced Sunday that it is unable to compete in the Music City Bowl, scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 30, due to an increase in positive COVID-19 tests among its student-athletes, coaches and staff following Mizzou Football’s final regular-season game against Mississippi State.
“Since concluding our regular season and conducting four rounds of tests over the last eight days, we have seen a significant increase in positive COVID-19 tests among our student-athletes, coaches and staff, and after consulting with local health officials, our team physicians and MU Health’s Dr. Steve Whitt, who is our representative on the SEC Medical Task Force, we unfortunately must pause all football team-related activities until at least January 2 to help contain the virus’ spread and ensure the health and well-being of everyone within our program and the community,” athletic director Jim Sterk said.
“Our student-athletes have been extremely diligent in following all of the SEC’s COVID-19 testing protocols since returning to campus back in the summer, and we are incredibly proud of their efforts to play every regular-season game this fall, as well as the success they have had on the field against a 10-game all-SEC schedule that included five games against nationally-ranked opponents, and in the classroom during the fall semester,” he added. “However, this eight-day uptick within our program is significant and has made it impossible for us to play in the bowl game, which I know comes as a disappointment to our student-athletes, coaches and fans, who were excited about the opportunity to play a great Iowa team in Nashville.”
“Our football student-athletes, the coaches and intercollegiate athletics staff have done an outstanding job representing the University of Missouri on and off the field this year,” added university president Mun Choi. “All of us have been proud of them and what they have accomplished this season. This is, of course, disappointing news, but we look forward to cheering on the team taking the field next fall and representing the University of Missouri with true Tiger spirit.”
Mizzou has paused all football activities until Jan. 2.
“I am disappointed that we were not able to finish the season against a tremendous opponent in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl later this week,” coach Eliah Drinkwitz said. “I am extremely proud of the fight and resiliency that our players have shown throughout this challenging season. This is the eighth time in 11 games we’ve been faced with a schedule adjustment, but we’ve been able to fight through and finish while competing at a very high level throughout the season, which I believe shows the true character of our team. We look forward to returning to Nashville to play in a future TransPerfect Music City Bowl, and experiencing all that this great bowl game offers.”
Well that sucks. Hope everyone is ok and recoveries easily.
My thoughts exactly.
Bad news, very sorry to hear this.
A disappointing end to a very honorable season for Mizzou. Yall fought well this year, so rest with honor. Next season isn’t far away.
Well that is disappointing but it is what it is. Can’t wait to see Mizzou next year with a full roster.
According to ESPN, Mizzou’s outbreak is traced back to their last game of the year in Starkville. I wonder how this with impact State in the Armed Forces Bowl?
That’s one less loss for them
Mizzou beat Arkansas!
The ref won that game for you not your players.
These arky fans sure are crybabies.
By ref’s winning it for us you mean by kicking Bolton out of the game in the 1st half on a perfectly legal hit? Yeah it was such an advantage for us to play without Bolton the rest of the day. Well thought out.
Crybabies your funny. After that bogus unsportsmanlike penalty the momentum shifted towards Mizzou. Yes, Bolton shouldn’t have been thrown out but more calls went tour way than ours. I’m just stating facts you goofy little kid.
Here’s a fact arkywaytooproud: You lost for the 5th straight time to a better team and a better program. Stop your crying. It’s getting old.
Booches your team is sh*t and you know it
Tony Tiger your a fool if you think you had the better team this year. Your schedule blah and you shot your wad early. Arkansas beats Missouri every in sports besides football so who really has the better program.
Arkyfalsepride, what part about “Mizzou won” don’t you understand? You’re team is awful and we’ve proved it 5 years in a row. It’s too bad you have such a problem with reality. You need to spend some time in Hot Springs for therapy and get yourself right.
Hey Randyleaky, they’ve got a big sale on at Foot Locker on football cleats. When your team chucks them down the field they go further.
Your funny kid. Guessing it so sad to be a Mizzou fan you got to beat your pecker against your forehead cause you finally made it in the SEC lmao. The truth is you haven’t achieved anything as far as a university in the conference but you think your relevant.
Arkynotsoproud, one of the best things about the SEC is we get to beat up on Vandy and Arkansas every year. It’s good to put those two games in the win column annually. Arky should consider the Sun Belt or the Mountain West where they’ll be more competitive.
You all got to learn some new songs. You sing that one every year. Best you work at winning than excuses.
Randi, this is how girls spell Randy. See a therapist about who you are.
All these comments by UofA fans are just nonsense. I thought our game was probably one of the most entertaining games from start to finish I have seen in quite awhile. Were there mistakes? Sure! For both teams. Have we had a few games come down to a few calls earlier in the season? Probably. This game was not one of them though. We just came up a bit short on defense in a great game. Both teams are on the up and up, that’s for sure and here’s to more games like that one in the future, but with the Hogs winning of course haha. Hope the tigers get safe and healthy soon.
Joe, you’re bad at math. 10 games for Missouri and 10 potential losses x 10 opponents = 100, 8 games for Iowa and their 8 opponents had only 80 potential losses.
Iowa has an all time losing record against SEC programs and this includes some average SEC programs
Iowa has an all time losing record against Missouri. Iowa’s not embarrassingly worse but we are talking about the the big- talking, over-rating of Iowa going on here. Nobody from the SEC or Missouri is being disrespectful to our Iowa neighbors, it’s the other way around. Don’t go away mad muskrat, just go away.
Tusk314, I agree with your comments but a few knuckleheads on this site who identify as arky fans have a real problem with reality. I thought this years game was awesome and the last team with the ball won. It doesn’t get any better than that.
yea I’m aware I watched the game. But Iowa was gonna crush you guys. Let’s see how you do with only Drink’s guys in a few years when all of Odom’s move thru the program.
You know it. They’re all good guys but Odom did nothing to develop many of them. Heck I can’t wait for him to target Arkansas for recruits.
You mean in a few years when we have a lot of 4 star recruits that Odom couldn’t recruit even offering hookers and blow?
Yea let’s see. lol
oh sure, that’s why Iowa’s powerhouse opponents lost 33 games and only one of them had a winning record.
Wolfman, how many wins over teams with winning records did Mizzou pull off this year? Yeah. That’s what I though.
*thought
Wolfman, I wanted to compare apples to apples, so I went back and looked at the total “Ls” for the teams Mizzou beat this year. 35. Mizzou’s 5 wins came against teams with a total of 35 losses with two of those wins coming against a terrible South Carolina and and even worse Vandy. Mizzou is fortunate this game wasn’t played.
Joe look for your “sign” in the story above this one.
This is why i’m going to have to boycott all Missouri vs. Arkansas contests. I’m not putting up with a new sick opponent on the schedule like Kansas was.
Make no mistake, I don’t blame Arkansas fans anymore than I do the ignorant people right here in Missouri who can’t have common courtesy and a working brain. If you are one of these enjoy your miserable life, ignorant, and limited life.
I do appreciate the desire to heat up the MU – Arkansas rivalry, so many thanks FrozenHawg, may next year be as entertaining.
LOL, it’s funny wolf gets all pissy when he likes to start so much. I can’t reply directly to you Guinny, but Kansas recruits Arkansas heavily, we get 4 or 5 kids a year that are SEC level. The ones that are I see Pitt winning over SirDrinkALot more than 80 % of the time. Good luck.
Just a perfect way to end 2020 for the Music City.
Killer tornado that caused over a billion dollars damage
Worst rioting outside of Seattle, Portland, and Minneapolis
One of the hardest hit Covid areas
Terrorist bombing
Now this
There are still 4 days for a satellite or comet to crash in the city. Or, an earthquake is still possible.
Lots of other people had to be thinking this, so good job with the post,
Prayers for all the affected people there which has to be almost everyone.
This is FOOLISH and borders on being CRIMINAL! “A significant increase in positive COVID-19 tests” is virtually MEANINGLESS!!! AGAIN: POSITIVE TESTS ARE NOT “CASES!” Other than to comply with the fear-mongering Karens, there is ZERO reason to test those who are asymptomatic. Multiple studies have shown that the asymptomatic are NOT carriers of the Wuhan virus! This includes a recent MASSIVE study of 10,000,000 in Wuhan, China. (Do a web search for “The study of 10,000,000 the pro-COVID lobby won’t talk about.”) What’s more, with over 70,000 reported Wuhan virus “cases” on 50 U.S. college/university campuses, there were only THREE hospitalizations and ZERO deaths! The young and healthy are NOT in danger of this virus, and the asymptomatic are NOT spreaders. It’s time to end these cancellations! LET THEM PLAY!!!
I agree with you tgt88 but there’s nothing us little people can do about it.
You’re right TGT88. It’s baffling how much of the general public still watch and believe the MSM. They wanted to completely shut down the country indefinitely back in March/April. Thank God that didn’t happen. This week the even the New York Times finally admits the Chinese Communist Party was concealing what was happening with the virus and in doing so caused a pandemic. What remains to be uncovered is if the CCP did so with intent.
?concealing?, hell they outlawed and then brought back the” wet markets” where there viruses evolve. In a million years, you couldn’t imagine a place on planet earth where all kinds of animals are slaughtered, have all their body fluids mixed, and come in contact with thousands of people in crowds. Who payed to bring back these Markets’? ans. the same rich and ignorant wealthy in China who made two more Rhino species extinct just last year alone. These people and others that consider the earth expendable have got to be stopped at all costs and now.
It’s college football. Get a grip. So many things are more important than a middling bowl game.
Yeah we should shut down the entire world for this virus.
Says the guy with no team alliance.
Great post
TGT88 and anyone that agrees with him are morons. This thing is serious and there is no room for dipsh!ts makung it worse. Get over that you cant have it your way because it doesn’t matter as long as it continues at this rate.
It’s not “serious” for the VAST majority of us, and this is especially true for young, healthy athletes. The data make this clear! Anyone who refuses to see such is the “moron!”
Tell that to the 1,000,000 American families that lost loved ones.
19.2 million cases in the usa, 333 thousand deaths, so a million loved ones is not an exaggeration at all. 5% get seriously ill. And it’s too early to know the stats on how many sustain permanent damage to heart, lungs, and brain. But we know for sure that’s happening to some young people too
It was suppose to be 2 million. Thank God Trump was able to save half of those who were marked for death!!
And that number is highly highly suspect. Know for a fact that hospitals are soliciting Covid for Death Certificates. Even where it’s not a contributing factor. I know one of those “loved ones”. And my heart goes out to anyone who loses someone they love, regardless of how they die.
A million? Joe, is that you?
If not, then certainly of the same mindset! What’s more, whatever is the actual death count from the Wuhan virus, there’s plenty of evidence that it’s no where near what those devoted to the fear porn are telling us! In addition, whatever is the death count, THERE’S NOT ONE YOUNG, HEALTHY ATHLETE AMONG THEM!!!
You’re just so wrong about everything. We have had a HS baseball player and a college football die from the virus. Not hard to look that up. Others have gotten myocarditis and are still trying to get back to full strength. The virus is not much of a problem for the youth, but they aren’t immune from serious consequences.
True. So should we outlaw cars and alcohol? Should we lock up any we suspect of mental illness (I use suspect because most suicides are somewhat of a surprise). At what point do you shut down everything for a few (and that would include me if I were to catch it)? I read the obits in a major metropolitan area in the midwest and Covid is less common than cancer in them and the ages are the same, 90s, high 80s, some 70s, and it smatters downward from their. The worst is seeing the young people who have OD’d or taken their lives.
No, LSUSMC, you haven’t had healthy young athletes–football or baseball–die from the Wuhan virus. Give us their names or provide links to the news accounts. I’m sure these stories were widespread if this is indeed the case. And no, as I’ve said on other posts, there’s NO definitive evidence that myocarditis, etc. is linked to the Wuhan virus. Stop with the fear porn!
A simple google search provided that info. You are a nutjob listening to other nutjobs. You are beyond help.
The only “nutjobs” here are the healthy people regularly parading around in masks, those pretending that a positive test constitutes a “case,” those foolishly cancelling events (or supporting such) because they continue to ignore the MOUNTAINS of data that show young, healthy people are in virtually ZERO danger from the Wuhan virus, and so on. We just ask that you keep your nutjobery to yourself and not impose it on the rest of us who simply want to live our lives: run our businesses, go to our schools, go to our churches, go to our malls/stores, play our games, etc.!!!
You’re still a nutjob. You’ve made that clear. Enjoy.
So we can’t call it the Chinavirus or the WuFlue, but WE ARE to blame Trump for letting it come here (FROM CHINA), it’s interesting the contortions some you go through trying to justify whatever the state propaganda media is pedaling.
Let’s have a look at the democrats in congress who proposed testing here in the USA when the virus broke out in China. Can’t look because it never happened. Every Democrat, and every republican both blew off public safety, because they didn’t want to be lightning rods in an election year. We really have some ethical leaders don’t we.
Most SEC teams, if not all, allowed their players to go home for Christmas. I am worried about Bama players leaving the “bubble” and coming back from Christmas holiday! They seem to handle it ok during Thanksgiving, but, there is always that possibility.
Considering the survival rate for the current Corinavirus pandemic is 99.6%, Tgt is right. These guys are just in C.Y.A. mode. That’ll change next year. If it doesn’t, I imagine college football will be the least of our worries.
Your bench is deep, you’ll make your game.
It was also questionable if Iowa was going to have enough for a roster to play in Nashville.
I heard that, but we pulled the trigger first. Probably going to go fishing this weekend as a result.
You would have thought that the out of control covid numbers in the state of Tennessee would have gotten it cancelled, or at least moved.
The Shoe joke isn’t bad tony tiger. Sure had no effect on the @$$ kicking fla put on your team.hell u guys gave up a half a hundred to them. Talk about crying you Mizzwho fan’s been crying about the brawl your team started way before Nov. Talk about Mullen citing a riot. I didn’t see him out there throwing blows like Mizzo staff and trainers. You Mizzo fans are pitiful.
You have to work so hard to lie like that, you’re wearing me out reading that fiction novel. Go dawg your sister(s) and brother(s), as if you could possible know who they are.
@ Wolfman, I make a comment about your team and you proceed to insult my family. How old are you? Im quite sure with a moronic comment like that you are at the age to where most likely you found your mother’s password to the parental controls for the computer. Wouldn’t expect anything less from a Mizzo fan that is most definitely the village idiot.
Dawgtime, Several million people saw Mullen cross the field to the Missouri bench where the Missouri team was waiting for Florida to clear the field. We all saw the Florida team come across the field. And the video showed the Missouri pass rusher only took one step after the ball was gone. Had he faked the pass he could have went right up the field with the ball. You’re a painfully exposed liar. That’s why I called YOUR story out. If you have a brother and or sister, I’m sure they already know you’re the family liar that gets caught and tries to run and hide behind them. Couldn’t have been more appropriate that everyone on on the Missouri sideline reacted to swarm by turning the fly swatters on the sweat bees.
Put down the bottle, you might have a problem with your double vision. And good luck to the GA in their bowl game. You guys should have no problems with Baylor.
Defintely have had no problem with MIZWHO. Nothing but a bottom feeder program in the Sec.
So what is the plan if covid cases rise in one of the playoff teams?
The plan should be safety of student athletes where less than 1% of them will make a living playing football. Even though. 5% are known to become critically ill. We know for sure the virus can damage heart, lungs, and brain. How will we know what percent of this damage is permanent until we follow up with studies that retest these patients for decades to come. Yes it’s ok to play football, no it’s not ok to ignore reasonable and do-able safety measures
In my parent’s generation we let too many people take risks with having sewage get into street-side water drainages. Many children contracted the Polio organism, many died and many were crippled for
life. We know the rough frequency of the appearance of plagues in history. But politics always makes us slow to react when a new bug evolves/emerges/returns. Be a human heart, not a politician.
NO!!! For those who contract it, we DON’T “know for sure” that the Wuhan virus presents any real long term danger to heart, lungs, etc. This is just more fear porn from a lockdown apologist! What we do “know for sure” from the data we already have, is that young, healthy people are in less danger from the Wuhan virus than they are from the flu, and that the asymptomatic are NOT spreaders of the Wuhan virus!
Wuhan virus? You automatically lose your debates. It makes you sound like a child.
Only a child–or one with the mind of a child–would take offense at the use of “Wuhan virus.”
It’s not what you call it, it’s the ignorance about the minimum safety requirement challenge, compared to playing in a football game, participating in a football practices, being in team meetings and locker rooms, bus and plane transportation, and the social habits of college student 2019 compared to 2020.
You and I both like and want to watch college football but everyone has to be more aware of what these athletes are required to make this happen for the past 11 months (since the
outbreak in China)
Positive tests are NOT “cases!” The “plan” should be NOT to test anyone who lacks symptoms (which is almost certainly virtually everyone with these teams!).
they shouldn’t have been playing such a meaningless game in the first place. We are in a pandemic, the only games that should be played are the semifinals and championship game this year.
Missou had a good year–they will be in the upper tier of the SEC east next year behind georgia.
Thanks. We’ll all be competing with each other next year. Going to be exciting to see what Shane can do down there (but not against us lol). I think we’re going to be caught in a rebuild year, a transition between Odom’s recruits and Drinkwitz’s. Each year is it’s own and you have to make your path. That said, I think the pressure will be on Georgia and Florida in the next few years and I don’t expect them to sit up there like Alabama.
” I think we’re going to be caught in a rebuild year, a transition between Odom’s recruits and Drinkwitz’s”
..that’s why I think we’ll ONLY win 8 games next year.
That’s a possibility. I think Drinkwitz did a pretty good job with the squad he inherited and the little he was able to prepare them for this season. I think we’re playing Boston College next year so that might be a tough game, they gave Notre Dame a pretty good go. Wish we were playing Tennessee in the later half and not the beginning of the season.
Hey JTF Don’t be a dumbass just go throw yourself of stone mountain. People are falling like flies and you people want to quote me numbers about it be a selective killer of the old. Go tell that to my Uncle that lost his boy. Yea SDS is a bunch of b!tches that bicker with each other over football when 90% have never sniffed what it likes to play college ball but tgis is getting ridiculous. I sincerely hope you people are not as dumb as you make yourselves out to he on here.
Sadly, many of them are…the comments section shows their thought process.
Like when you openly and loudly threw shade at a young kid playing baseball because you apparently didn’t think his homeruns were impressive and didn’t like that people were heaping praise on him?
People are NOT “falling like flies” from the Wuhan virus! What a WICKED LIE!!! In fact there’s not ONE serious case of the Wuhan virus amongst ALL of college athletics! Stop with your FEAR PORN!!!
I’d slap you silly in person. I have friends and family out there trying to keep fools like you off a ventilator. I’ve seen kids, Adults, and the elderly loose their lives down here. Just because the news isn’t rolling their names on the TV like tgose in Vietnam doesn’t mean it didnt happen. Do us all a favor and not waste a vaccination on your dumbass.
Yeah, you’re brave in an anonymous way. (And you’d get your a$$ whipped!) I have friends and family on the front lines of this as well, but THANK GOD they see this virus for what it is: not a danger for the VAST majority of us! And my 70+ year-old parents agree with me! And don’t worry, as a healthy man in his 50s, I have about ZERO chance of ending up on a ventilator from the Wuhan virus. Which is why I NEVER wear a mask, etc. in church, at the grocery store, in Walmart, Lowes, my kids ballgames, and so on. And no–unless they have SIGNIFICANT comorbidities–you haven’t seen kids or healthy young adults lose their lives from this virus. Name one case (that can be verified), I dare you. And don’t worry I NEVER planned on getting the vaccine, because I DON’T NEED IT! Open your eyes!!!
ArkansasProud, you’re a big tough guy behind a keyboard. You’re self righteous indignation is hollow. And telling people to throw themselves off mountains and not “waste” a vaccine makes you no better than the people you apparently think are beneath you.
Only one person in Missouri under 20 has died. Over 75% of the deaths are people 70+ with 50% of the overall deaths over 80 years old. Covid is not the Spanish flue of 1918.
I personally think telling someone to kill themselves because they have a different opinion renders you a complete and irredeemable idiot. Everything you type after that is meaningless.
Sucks Mizz won’t get to play. Always an exciting team to watch in part because I never know if it’s going to be a low scoring game around the 10-20 points per team mark or up in the high 30s and 40s. Sad to see some of the conspiracy theorists going off in this group, but I don’t care enough to argue with people who aren’t going to listen anyway.
good addition CLVOL
Some people in this page are wild. Is it normally this crazy in here lol?
it varies, but it’s always fun to read how crazy football fans are about this entertaining game. Glad you joined us.
Thanks woflman.
Makes me wonder if we’ll ever have a normal season again. I think its time we take a break until it can come back normal. Otherwise its like eating two week old meat.
We just don’t know if this will be another 100 years bad bug or whether the new one in England right now will be worse. Scientists are still arguing about how many Spanish Flu bugs there were in 1917-20. We know the one that came out of Kansas killed nobody before the war. Then we know the one in France killed about 3% of younger people between 20 and 35 years of age. Then about the same danger from the one that came out of China later that year, and finally a 4th bug developed in England. But there are plagues that are a lot worse, Pneumonic Plague kills 100% of everyone that catches it regardless of treatment.
I don’t want to get political and I don’t have a vested interest in the Music City Bowl so, to Mizzou, get well. And to Arky, everyone outside of the Show Me State knows the Razorbacks were robbed, ROBBED of the game in Auburn. I can’t say Arky vs Mizzou would have been any different but that day at Auburn will always be remembered as an SEC official bust!
Arky has lost 5 straight games to Mizzou yet some of their fans still think their team is better than Missouri. They keep writing smack but their team keeps losing. You really don’t see smart Mizzou fans talking trash to UGA because we’ve only beaten them one time. Some Arky fans on this site are crybabies.
I’ve seen you post this a dozen times. If you ask for an argument you will receive one most of the time.
