Bill Walton has outlined the keys to the national championship matchup on Monday night between Kansas and North Carolina.
Walton, the ESPN and Westwood One analyst, told Rich Eisen that the Jayhawks’ game plan will be to run as much as possible.
Walton said about this championship environment, players have to love pressure and risk, and doubt and uncertainty.
Walton admitted that North Carolina will be emotionally tired following the historic win over Duke on Saturday.
If you’re Bill Self and Kansas, Walton said, “We cannot look back, we cannot hold back. They’re going to be emotionally tired. Caleb Love and R.J. Davis, Leaky Black, they can play all day long and never have any sort of problems physically. Brady Manek and Armando Bacot, with his ankle (injury), they’re not in that same situation. So if you’re Kansas, your mindset is we are going to run, and we are going to run, and we are going to run. We are not going to stop and at some point they’re going to wear down.”
While Walton believes that North Carolina doesn’t have the depth, the stars for Kansas still have to bring it.
“You don’t get a championship by sort of hanging around and hope that the other team is going to not get it done,” Walton said. “If your success is based on the failures of others, that’s not what championships are all about.”
Walton also mentioned that the team that plays the best on Saturday night, in this case Kansas, does not play the best on Monday.
