Players from D1 college basketball team file petition to unionize

Something interesting is going on in Hanover, New Hampshire.
The players for Dartmouth basketball filed a petition with the NLRB (National Labor Relations Board) to unionize Thursday morning. They’re far from the first to try this, but early details out of Hanover paint more of a picture.
Dartmouth is one of a few teams which has never cracked the March Madness field past its expansion in 1985, partly because of the dominance of the Ivy League from Princeton to Penn to Harvard. They finished last season 10-18.
According to sources close to On3 Sports’ Pete Nakos, the union was formed due to the Ivy League’s lack of scholarships and not permitting players to work out with coaches during the summer, obvious setbacks for their conditioning, etc. This report has not been yet confirmed.

A few years ago, even a breath of a union was wishful thinking at best. But with recent developments to the NCAA and how it views student athletes, it only seems like a matter of time before a certain group is successful.
