It’s one game.

That’s the attitude South Carolina needs to take into tonight’s non-conference tilt against East Carolina, nine days after getting shoved off the field by Texas A&M as a sexy preseason pick to meet Alabama in the SEC Championship Game.

The Gamecocks’ No. 9 ranking is no more and another loss would put Steve Spurrier’s squad out of the Top 25 for the first time since the 2010 season.

“You have to go one game at a time … preseason talk is all it is,” Spurrier said this week. “No one knows how a team really comes around to be. There’s obviously expectations every year. Some teams may not be as good as advertised and some are better than advertised. It’s a wait-and-see for us. Wait and see.”

South Carolina gave up a school-record 680 total yards in the opener, forcing Lorenzo Ward’s hand in the secondary. The Gamecocks’ defensive coordinator announced three defensive changes for tonight’s game, hoping to provide a spark for a struggling unit.

Senior cornerback Brison Williams is probable with a forearm injury, but true freshman Wesley Green — who coaches said adds depth and would likely play — is not dressed for the second consecutive game.

Several areas to watch tonight include the Gamecocks’ backfield where Spurrier promised redshirt freshman David Williams would see his first game action. Mike Davis is expected to start despite missing nearly two quarters against the Aggies last week with bruised ribs.
