3 SEC programs among leaders in true freshmen starters, it’s only working out for 1 of them

Whether it’s because of skill, injuries or lack of depth, there are always some schools that turn to true freshmen to play key roles.

This year is no different, and there are a trio of SEC schools that have used the most true freshmen starters this season. However, it has led to varying results.

As Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports pointed out on Twitter on Tuesday, Alabama is tied with UMass for the most true freshmen starters this season with seven. Arkansas (five) and Tennessee (four) are also in the top five on the list.

The Crimson Tide have been the most successful with that many true freshmen in their lineup, as they’re 5-0 and the No. 1 ranked team in the country. This past Saturday, they started five against Ole Miss, including offensive lineman Evan Neal and four defensive starters.

Of course, Alabama also has veteran leadership around these freshmen, including junior quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, one of the early favorites to win the Heisman Trophy.

Arkansas and Tennessee have not been as successful this season.

The Razorbacks are 2-3 and have lost their last two games against San Jose State and Texas A&M. They’re also winless in SEC play, as they fell to Ole Miss earlier this season.

The Vols are 1-3 with their only win coming against Chattanooga. They’ve lost their only SEC game, which was against Florida on Sept. 21.

Of course, the positive thing about these two schools playing true freshmen is that those players should benefit from the experience and have it help them develop during their time at the school. So, while Arkansas and Tennessee may continue to struggle this season, these players could help them turn things around in the future.
