Only one set of rankings will decide which four teams make the College Football Playoff, but there are plenty of other rankings for fans to consider and debate.
ESPN assigns all 130 FBS teams a Football Power Index score. The score, defined as “a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season,” is then used to rank every team.
The updated scores after the Week 9 have seven SEC teams in the top 25:
- No. 1 – Alabama
- No. 3 – Georgia
- No. 10 – LSU
- No. 12 – Florida
- No. 15 – Mississippi State
- No. 17 – Texas A&M
- No. 18 – Auburn
The FPI is not a resume ranking, as demonstrated by the fact that Mississippi State moved down two spots from No. 13 to No. 15 after beating Texas A&M, a team ranked higher in the Associated Press Top 25. TAMU and Auburn are in the same spots as Week 8.
Changes from Week 8 include Florida dropping one spot from No. 11 to No. 12 and Missouri falling from No. 23 to out of the top 25 at No. 26.
Kentucky, 7-1 with a shot to win the SEC East, continues to get no love from the FPI. The Wildcats are No. 28.
