Aaron Murray took in Auburn’s game with Mercer, a 42-16 victory, and offered his assessment of the offense, led by TJ Finley.

Murray shared his thoughts with “McElroy and Cubelic In the morning” on WJOX out of Birmingham, Alabama, and reported that Bryan Harsin leading into the game said he was impressed with Finley’s competitiveness to win the starting QB job.

“They felt like they improved with him, keeping his eyes up, keeping him focused down field, not looking down the rush,” Murray said.

Murray noted that watching the quarterbacks from the field in the pregame, that Zach Calzada loved to throw a fastball, and Murray remembered seeing that last season at Texas A&M.

“But when you do see Zach in person throw the football, my goodness can he let that thing rip,” Murray said. “Would still like to see him develop, if he ever does get a chance to develop touch, and a little bit more anticipation. But that ball just comes right off his hand.”

About Robby Ashford, Murray said the ball didn’t have that same spin, and Murray admitted that he knew Ashford wasn’t the same throwing the ball because he’s the athlete and more mobile. While more of a runner, Ashford also made some big-time throws in the game, Murray said.

“I loved the game plan from Harsin, mixing in personnel groups, mixing in the quarterbacks,” Murray said, and noted the play with Finley and Ashford in on the same play, which resulted in somewhat of a triple option. “There’s skill on that offense, now it’s Harsin finding ways to get all of them touches, creating different formations and I thought he did a really good job there in the first game.”
