By and large, when there’s a short-yardage situation, it’s easy to see which player will get the ball. So making a conversion, in a lot of ways, is even more impressive. Just about every one in the stadium knows what’s coming, and they still convert.

CFB Film Room has collected the best in the SEC at gaining a first down on a play that’s two or fewer yards to go on third or fourth down. For perspective, the top five teams on fourth down in the SEC are Florida, Kentucky, LSU, Texas A&M and Ole Miss. These players are also among the best in multiple offensive categories, such as total rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.

Texas A&M’s Trayveon Williams, who is second in the SEC in rushing behind Kentucky’s Benny Snell, Jr. is perfect in these short-yardage situations. Scott Phillips of Ole Miss, who is third in the SEC in rushing, has converted 85.7 percent of short-yardage plays. LSU’s Nick Brossette leads the SEC with 10 rushing touchdowns, but is also 9-for-12 in short-yardage situations.
