Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack is a finalist for the head coaching job at Arkansas, according to a report by John Talty and Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports on Saturday afternoon.

If Wommack does take the job in Fayetteville, it would be the 2nd piece of the Alabama coaching staff to depart, with co-offensive coordinator JaMarcus Shephard accepting the head coaching job at Oregon State earlier this week. Shephard is getting a 5-year contract at Oregon State, according to a report by ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Friday morning.

Now, Wommack is surfacing as a name to watch at an SEC rival program. According to Saturday’s CBS Sports report, there were reports earlier this week that South Florida’s Alex Golesh had taken the Arkansas job. But those reports were premature, according to CBS Sports, which puts Wommack firmly back in the running for the Razorbacks job.

According to the CBS Sports report, if Golesh ultimately passes on the Arkansas job, then Wommack would become the Razorbacks’ top target. Wommack is a familiar name in Arkansas football circles, having played his college football there in 2005 and 2006 before finishing his college playing career at Southern Miss.

Wommack does have head coaching experience, spending 3 years at South Alabama from 2021-23 before heading to Alabama in 2024. He went 22-16 at South Alabama.

Golesh is still Arkansas’ No. 1 target, according to the CBS Sports report, which noted that Golesh plans to make his final decision regarding Arkansas on Sunday after South Florida’s regular season finale against Rice on Saturday. Golesh has led the Bulls to an 8-3 record so far this season.
