Former Alabama standout Jarran Reed is now a free agent.
The Seattle Seahawks announced Reed’s release Friday afternoon. The move comes after Reed tweeted about his coming departure on Thursday evening.
It’s a surprising move as Reed had been a starter on the Seahawks defense. The release is being described as a “casualty” of the salary cap.
NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport noted that the Seahawks spent much of Friday trying to trade Reed. The Thursday evening tweet by Reed revealing he would be released by Friday afternoon made it difficult to trade the former second-round pick.
Reed has played in 72 games during his NFL career, including 63 starts. This past season, Reed recorded 6.5 sacks, 38 tackles (5 TFL) and 14 quarterback hits, starting all 16 games.
After spending much of today attempting to trade DT Jarran Reed, source said it’s looking like a release for the #Seahawks starting DT. Rare for a free agent of this caliber to be available now, but extenuating circumstances.

It appears Jarran Reed has been cut as a cap casualty. The move saves $8.975 million in cap space (most of which, if not all has been spent already) with $5 million in dead money.
This also signals L.J. Collier being a full-time interior player. https://t.co/kXDGAZ4wL8
