Alabama DC on FSU QB Thomas Castellanos: ‘We’ll have our work cut out for us’

They say if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. The Florida State Seminoles failed to beat Thomas Castellanos when he brought Boston College to Tallahassee last season. So, in the transfer portal this offseason, they joined forces with Castellanos, who Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack expects to be tough to slow down.

Wommack spoke glowingly about Castellanos’ ability to extend plays during his Monday press conference. He told reporters Castellanos is “hard to [tackle]” and will present a challenge for the Crimson Tide defense.

Castellanos’ best game of the 2024 season came against Florida State. He completed 62.5 % of his passes (10/16) for 106 yards and 2 touchdowns. He added 14 carries for 73 yards and another score with his legs to carry his Eagles past the Seminoles 28-13.

Earlier this offseason, Castellanos predicted he’d perform similarly against Alabama. He reportedly told On3.com’s Pete Nakos in June that the Crimson Tide “wouldn’t have Nick Saban to save them” from him, and that he “just doesn’t see them” stopping him. He added more bulletin board material to Wommack’s arsenal last week when he suggested Florida State’s defense would be “the hardest defense” he’ll see all year.

Alabama has often let actions speak louder than words over the years. If that’s still the case, Wommack’s defense will try to do its talking at 3:30 p.m. E.T. on Saturday. And if Castellanos isn’t ready, they’ll be the ones with the last laugh once the final whistle blows. Hopefully his chin strap is buckled tight.
